School Sport Australia (SSA) advises that due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent restriction on school sport programs, SSA has cancelled all Championships for 2020.
This is in addition to the previous announcement of the cancellation of the 2020 SSA Triathlon (13 – 19 Years) & Aquathlon (11 – 12 Years), 18 Years & Under Baseball, 18 Years & Under Tennis and 17 Years & Under Softball Championships that were scheduled to be held between March and May 2020. The 2020 Championships that have been added to this list are:
SSA President Graeme Jennings said “The Board of School Sport Australia is again saddened to add these championships to the list of those we have already cancelled. The Board continues to sympathise with students and teachers as we understand many would have begun preparation for this year’s Championships. However, the safety and welfare of students and teachers plus all other people involved in our championships is paramount to SSA hence the decision to cancel them”.
Mr Jennings went on to say “Like everyone in the community, we hope the restrictions on sporting activities are lifted as soon as possible. We recognise however that this is an issue that may take many months to overcome. A number of member bodies have indicated they will not be in a position to select and prepare teams in 2020 hence the decision to cancel, not postpone, the Championships”.
