New South Wales (NSW) have successfully taken out both the 17 Years and Under Boys and Girls titles at the 2016 SSA Softball National Championships in Melbourne.
The NSW girls team claimed gold after beating Queensland (QLD) 2-1 in the Grand Final. The NSW boys team also defeated QLD to take out the gold medal 6-0.
Acting Softball National Secretary and three-time Olympian Nat Titcume said it was a fantastic week of competition with lots of support behind both the girls and boys championships.
“The quality of players in this competition has been outstanding,” she said.
“It’s been great to see support from all states and territories watching each others games.”
Titcume also commented on the SSA student umpire program, which added another dimension of student involvement and the way in which young people can get involved in sport.
“I was impressed with the student umpires and the way in which teams have respected them throughout the week,” she said.
The Olympian medallist said being involved as National Secretary has been a wonderful experience.
“It is nice to be back involved at a grass-roots level. It all began right here for me – in school sport. It is great to watch and help the next generation of national players starting on the same platform that I did.”
