Australia achieve impressive medal tally in Budapest

The School Sport Australia Cross Country team have returned from the 2016 ISF World Schools Cross-Country Championships in Budapest with an impressive medal tally.

Two Australian school teams from Barker College (NSW) and St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School (QLD) including 12 individual athletes made up the Australian squad, which was selected at the 2015 School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships held in Melbourne at the end of August.

The girls school team from St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School (QLD) including Lucinda Crouch, Lara Crouch, Isabella Burdon, Brianna Campton, Annabel Kennedy and Alexandra Clements brought home gold taking out first place at the Championships.

The boys school team from Barker College, consisting of Kieren Tall, Lachie Cubbin, Jack Brown, Mikey Nicholas, Hugh Hunt, Ben Playford and Taylor John proudly placed 4th.

The Selected Girls Team consisting of Katrina Robinson (QLD), Jessica Rohan (WA), Lauren Ryan (VIC), Courtney Hopkins (NSW), Cara Woolnough (QLD) and Jessica Guo (NSW) won silver while the Selected Boys Team including Josh Torley (ACT), Jye Edwards (NSW), Joshua Phillips (NSW), Ed Trippas (NSW), Cassidy Shaw (VIC), Liam Henderson (NSW) placed 4th.

There were some outstanding individual results achieved as well including gold medals for Lucinda Crouch and Katrina Robinson, a silver medal for Lauren Ryan and bronze for Lara Crouch.

SSA Cross Country National Secretary Trevor Wiseman said competing at the 2016 ISF World Schools Cross-Country Championships allows Australia’s best school athletes the chance to compete at a World Championship and experience international competition.

“This event is significant for School Sport Australia and its athletes as it is the only Schools World Cross-Country Championships,” he said.
