The 2016 Australian Cross Country Championships get underway this weekend in the nation’s capital.
With over 970 participants from across the country and New Zealand ready to take on one of Australia’s best cross country courses at Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra.
The strength of Australia’s distance running at the elite level has been demonstrated on the greatest stage of all in Rio, with multiple athletes in career best form progressing to finals in the longer events. No doubt the participants in the cross country championships will take inspiration from our green and gold, as they strive for personal bests and the glory of the national champion title.
Athletes will be representing their states and territories across individual and team championships. New South Wales dominated in 2015, winning all team championship categories in the school aged events.
A strong growth since 2012 has seen para athletics multi class numbers increase from just eight athletes to now in excess of 80 taking to the start line this weekend.
Participants will range in age from 11 years, to the more senior of our open aged athletes. The event, thanks to a thriving relationship with Athletics Australia, presents the best combined sport pathway for cross country runners, providing national opportunities and outstanding event conditions to athletes of all ages nationally and School Sport Australia is incredibly proud of this partnership.
