A Brief History

The inaugural Triathlon event was first held in Adelaide, South Australia in 1991. Four (4) States, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia participated. Teams of 24 athletes (12 males and 12 females) competed across 3 age groups Junior, Intermediate and Senior in individual triathlon events. This was seen as an introductory event with no Championship winners awarded.

In 1992, the Championship moved to Queensland and was held at Bond University. New South Wales joined the competition which also saw the introduction of a swim, ride run relay format, and the first official Championship was awarded to Queensland.

Australian Capital Territory joined the event in 1994 and from 1999 until 2003, athletes from Northern Territory and Tasmania participated in the Championships.

The Championships have been held in all States and Territories excluding Northern Territory.

In 2007, due to the increase in participating at the local level, team sizes were increased to a maximum of 36 (18 males and 18 females).

In 2016, the format of the relay was changed to the ITU (now WT) format with 2 males and 2 females completing a shorter triathlon before tagging the next team member.

In 2019, Queensland School Sport hosted the Championships on the Sunshine Coast. As part of this event, an invitation Aquathlon for 11 and 12 Year Olds was conducted for local regional teams and visiting States and Territories. This was a precursor for the inclusion of Aquathlon as part of the Championships.

In 2022, after a two year break due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Championships returned to the Sunshine Coast.  States and Territories had been approved to send more than one team, and it was exciting to have 2 teams competing from the host State in Triathlon. 2 teams from Queensland and teams from Victoria and Western Australia participated in the inaugural Aquathlon event. In addition, MC athletes representing Queensland and Victoria participated in the Championships, competing in individual and relay events across 11 – 19 years of age.

In 2023, Aquathlon awarded it’s first Championship to Queensland with athletes from Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. MC events were expanded to include Triathlon with athletes from New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

In 2024, Western Australia hosted the Championship in Rockingham and fielded a second team in Triathlon.

In 2025, Aquathlon continued to expand with teams from Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria Blue and Victoria White and Western Australia Gold and Western Australia Black contesting the Championship. School Sport Western Australia hosted an All Comers Aquathlon for local and visiting athletes across all age groups including the visiting parents.

The 2026 Championship will introduce the ‘super sprint’ format of racing across all age groups in Aquathlon and Triathlon.
